Teaching

Currently serving as the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Oregon, Krueger is a sought-after educator, clinician, and adjudicator. He is a passionate advocate for jazz education and is heavily involved in community-focused programs. He is the director of the Oregon Jazz Festival, the University of Oregon Summer Jazz Improvisation Camp, and the Day of Improvisation, a free one-day workshop for high school students.

He has been a guest lecturer at the University of Northern Colorado, the University of Montana, Southern Oregon University, and more. In addition to teaching trumpet masterclasses, he has presented on a wide range of topics including improvisation, developing practice routines, arranging, pedagogy, program administration. He is a frequent presenter at the Oregon Music Education Association Conference, where his conference sessions have addressed topics such as trumpet fundamentals, jazz style and phrasing, rhythm section troubleshooting, teaching methods for improvisation, jazz arranging techniques for the band director, and guidance on repertoire selection.

In addition to teaching jazz studies at the University of Oregon, Krueger has experience conducting concert ensembles and has taught at various levels in the educational system. He served as assistant band director at Washington HS in Sioux Falls, SD before taking over as Director of Bands at Lane Community College in Eugene, OR. His ensembles have earned international recognition—under his direction, the 2014 Lane Jazz Ensemble was named the winner of the community college large jazz ensemble category of the DownBeat Student Music Awards, and in its second year under Krueger's direction, the 2024 Oregon Jazz Ensemble won a DownBeat award for outstanding performance in the graduate college large jazz ensemble category.

As a combined artist/educator/administrator, Krueger is organized and detail-oriented. In rehearsal, he keeps a fast pace and engages the students through singing, body movement, and guided listening in addition to performance. He programs music from a diverse range of composers/arrangers, seeks to highlight student works, and includes repertoire from both contemporary and historical eras. In the applied studio, he seeks to empower his students with the skills needed to realize their personal goals and musical aspirations.

Krueger is interested in teaching clinics, masterclasses, presenting at conferences, and directing honors ensembles. Please reach out to discuss potential collaborations.
